Cold, bright days

December feels like a proper winter visit: afternoons reach about 7°C, while nights can dip below freezing. It's drier than November, with rain on only a few days, and you'll often get several hours of sun. Still, the short days and cold air make long outdoor plans tiring.

Huaguoshan is still worth seeing, but its paths and open viewpoints can feel chilly. Save time for a warm meal of Lianyungang seafood afterwards. Skip swimming at Liandao Island; the beach is better for a brisk walk than a dip.

Quiet season

December sits outside Lianyungang's best spring and autumn months, so you'll usually find fewer visitors than in April, May or October. It's also winter low season, when hotels may cost less than during those popular periods. The trade-off is a quieter seaside feel and less appeal for beach days.

If you hate crowds, you'll likely enjoy wandering around the old streets near Xinpu without the busier-season rush. Travelling with kids? Keep the Huaguoshan visit short if the cold wind sets in.

Winter plans

There's no major city-wide December festival to build a trip around. The winter solstice, called Dongzhi, is observed in China, and families often share dumplings or tangyuan, sweet rice balls. It's a cosy local food occasion, not a large public event.

For a practical stop, head to Liandao Island for a coastal walk, then warm up with seafood in the nearby Lianyun area. Check local transport before you go, since island connections can feel less convenient in winter. The sea breeze can be sharp even on a sunny day, so don't count on the coast feeling warm.
