Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March to May is when Chengtangcun works best. March is still cool, with a high of 16°C and cold nights near freezing. By April it's 23°C and pleasant for walking all day. May reaches 29°C, and the rain picks up a little but rarely spoils a day.

Autumn is just as good. September still has some summer humidity, but October is the calmer month. It's dry, mild and sunny, with highs around 22°C. If you want long days outside with little fuss, aim for April, May or October.

Summer: hot, then very wet

June is hot, at 33°C, and it's our hottest month. July and August are the real problem. July brings 273 mm of rain over 18 days, and the air feels heavy and sticky. Plans fall apart when it rains that often.

If you can only come in summer, go in early June. Keep your schedule loose and have indoor options ready. Don't count on a clear sky for photos in July.

Winter: cold, dry and quiet

From December to February, highs sit between 5°C and 8°C and nights dip below freezing. It's dry, with only a few wet days a month. The sun still shows up for about five or six hours a day, so it's cold but rarely gloomy. Winter suits you if you like empty streets and don't mind bundling up. It's less good for long outdoor days.

Crowds and events

Shandong is a busy province, and Chinese holidays shape the crowds more than the weather does. Expect more people around the Qingming holiday in early April, the May Day break at the start of May, and the National Day week in early October. Those dates fall in our best weather months, so you're trading perfect conditions for company.

Chinese New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many local shops close for a few days, and families travel. That can make getting around harder, even though the cold keeps tourists away.

For the quietest good weather, pick mid-May or late October, away from the holiday weeks. I'm not certain of specific local festivals in Chengtangcun itself, so check with your host for village events.
