January: cold, quiet days

January in Chengtangcun feels properly wintry. Afternoons reach about 5°C, but nights drop to -5°C, so the cold can linger after sunset. Rain is rare, with just two wet days on average, and you'll get some winter sun between cloudy spells.

That makes short walks through the village more appealing than long days outdoors. You can explore at a relaxed pace, then head inside when the afternoon chill sets in. January isn't ideal for lingering outside after dark, and it's not the best month for a warm-weather break. April and May, and October, are better choices if you want milder days.

Holidays and crowds

If you hate crowds, January is usually a quieter time to visit Chengtangcun than the popular spring and autumn months. Winter is low season, so stays may cost less than in April, May or October, though holiday travel can change that.
