When to go to Tai'an: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
Tai'an is the base for Mount Tai, one of China's five sacred mountains, so your trip mostly depends on how the climb feels. March to May and September to October are the best stretch. Our data rates all five of those months Excellent.
April and October are the easiest for the stairs. Days reach the low 20s, nights are cool, and rain is light. May is warmer, with highs near 29°C, and showers start to show up. September is still warm but a bit muggy. By October the air is crisper, and you'll get clear views from the top.
March is Excellent too, but it's chilly early on. Pack a proper coat for the summit, which is always colder than the town below.
Summer: hot, then very wet
June is hot and gets about 10 rainy days. July is the worst month. It's the wettest, with 248 mm of rain on 18 days, and it feels sticky. August is nearly as bad. Both are rated Poor.
Wet steps on the Mount Tai trail can be slippery, and clouds often hide the view. If you must come in summer, choose June. Or climb at night and watch sunrise from the top. That's a local tradition, and it also dodges the afternoon heat and storms.
Summer school holidays bring the biggest crowds, so expect queues at the cable cars and at Dai Temple in town.
Winter: quiet and cold
December and January are the driest months, with only 2 rainy days each. They're also cold, with January lows of -6°C. The mountain can be icy. Check that the trail is open before you go, since conditions can change fast.
The upside is space. You'll often have the stone steps to yourself, and frosted pines look lovely at the summit. February is the coldest on lows after January, but it's slightly milder. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, brings a short burst of domestic visitors, and many people climb for good luck.
Crowds and timing
Peak season runs from May to October, and it spikes around the national holidays: Labour Day in early May and Golden Week in early October. October is a lovely month, but the first week is packed. Come in the second half of the month if you can. Weekdays in April or late September give you the best mix of good weather and room to move.
