Visiting Tai'an in July
July: hot and very wet
July in Tai'an feels sticky, with warm nights and heavy rain often interrupting the day. The high reaches 33°C, humidity is 75%, and rain falls on 18 days. There's plenty of daylight, but cloud and rain can make the sky feel gloomy.
Sightseeing around Dai Temple works better between showers than a long exposed walk. On Mount Tai, wet stone steps can be slippery, and cloud may hide the views. Save a full climb for a clearer forecast; avoid setting off if storms are expected.
Summer crowds
Chinese school summer holidays bring families to Tai'an, especially to climb Mount Tai. Weekends can feel crowded on the main paths and around the cable car, while stays and transport can cost more than in April, May or October, the more comfortable months to visit.
If you hate crowds, go on a weekday and make Dai Temple your main outing. There's no major July festival I'd plan a trip around, but summer break itself is a busy travel period.
Make the mountain easier
If you're travelling with kids, don't feel you have to climb every step. The cable car from Zhongtianmen cuts out a steep section, though you'll still need to walk on the mountain. Rain can also make the stone paths slick, so turn back if conditions worsen.
For a lower-key afternoon, browse the old streets near Dai Temple and try Tai'an jianbing, a local savoury pancake. It's an easier plan than committing to Mount Tai when the clouds are low. June is also hot, but July is much wetter, so expect more changes to your plans.
