When to go to Yantai: a seasonal guide

Spring and early summer: the sweet spot

Yantai wakes up slowly. March is still chilly, with highs around 10°C, but April is mild and dry enough for walking the old streets near Yantai Hill and the Zhifu Island waterfront. By May it's warm, with highs of 24°C and sea breezes in the afternoon.

May is our top pick, and it's easy to see why. Days are bright and the sea air feels fresh rather than sticky. Rain does pick up, though, so keep a plan B like the Yantai Museum. June is warmer still and good for the beach, but showers get more frequent. Yantai is also famous for cherries and apples, and cherry season in late spring is a good reason to visit the orchards around the city.

Summer: beach time, with a wet catch

July and August are the hottest months, with highs near 30°C. They're also the wettest, with rain on about half the days. Humidity is high, and afternoons can feel heavy. August is the wettest, just ahead of July.

This is also peak season for domestic visitors. School's out, and families fill the beaches at Yantai's Beach Scenic Area and the seaside resort towns nearby. If you love swimming and don't mind rain and crowds, it works. Travelling with kids? Go for the beach, but keep a rainy-day backup. If you hate crowds, look at June or September instead.

Many people also catch the ferry to Penglai, a coastal town known for its old Penglai Pavilion, and the seafood is excellent here in summer. Just check the sea forecast first, as storms can disrupt sailings.

Autumn: calm, clear and comfortable

September is still warm, at 25°C, with less rain than July or August. By October, it's settled and pleasant, with highs of 20°C and cool, comfortable evenings. October ties with May as our best month, and it's a great pick for coastal walks, wine touring and city sightseeing. Yantai is one of China's main wine regions, so a stop at Changyu Wine Culture Museum fits well into a trip. Early October is busy because of China's National Day holiday week, so expect more people at the main sights.

Winter: quiet and cold

From December to February, highs sit between 2°C and 4°C, and nights fall below freezing. It's quiet, with few tourists and cheaper stays, but it feels raw by the water. It's best for a short city stay, with hot seafood noodles and long lunches indoors. November is a decent in-between month, cool but mostly dry and calm.
