Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April and May are the easy wins. April days are mild at 20°C, with cool nights, and rain is light. By May it's properly warm, and you can sit outside in the evening. September and October are just as good. September still feels like summer, while October is crisp and clear.
If you want to walk around, these are your months. Try the Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park and the museum beside it. Both are mostly outdoors and easier in mild weather. The 1976 earthquake shaped the whole city, so give yourself time here.
Summer: hot, wet and sticky
June is fine, but things turn in July. It's the hottest month at 32°C, and it's also the wettest. Rain falls on about half the days, and the air feels heavy. August is nearly as bad, with 31°C and a lot of rain. Showers often come as sudden downpours, so plan indoor stops like the Tangshan Museum or a long lunch.
Travelling with kids? Early June is easier than midsummer. Chinese school holidays run through July and August, so families fill trains and attractions then. That's another reason to skip it if you can.
Winter: cold, dry and quiet
From December to February, it's properly cold. January is the coldest month, with highs of 1°C and nights at -9°C. It's dry, though, and skies are fairly bright. You won't fight for space, but you'll want to keep outings short and warm.
March and November are in-between months. Both are rated Good. March is still chilly at night, and November turns cold fast. They're fine for a city break if you don't mind a coat.
Crowds and events
Tangshan isn't a big tourist stop, so crowds are mild most of the year. The busiest times are Chinese public holidays. These include Spring Festival in late January or February, the early May Labour Day break, and the National Day holiday in the first week of October. Trains and hotels get busy then, even though the weather in early October is lovely.
Tangshan is known for its ceramics, and its Tangshan Ceramics Expo is a big local draw. Check the dates before you go, since they change. For a quieter trip with good weather, aim for late April, mid-May or mid-to-late September.
