Mild days outdoors

September feels warm rather than scorching, which is why it earns an excellent 10 out of 10 on our comfort score. Afternoons reach about 27°C, and evenings cool to around 15°C. Rain falls on seven days, but there's usually enough dry time for a walk around Nanhu Central Park or a visit to Kailuan National Mine Park.

Compare that with August, when highs reach 31°C and the rain is much heavier, and September feels like a clear step up. October is drier still, though noticeably cooler. Keep plans flexible in case showers interrupt a day outside.

Autumn visits and holidays

September is a good time to learn about Tangshan's earthquake history at the Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park. Afterwards, you can spend time outdoors without summer's sticky heat. You'll also start to see autumn colours in the parks later in the month.

The Mid-Autumn Festival can fall in September, though its date changes each year. It's a major family holiday in China, so expect more domestic travel if it overlaps with your visit. Mooncakes, the traditional filled pastries, are easy to spot around the festival.

Crowds and local tips

Along with April to May, September and October are Tangshan's best months to visit. September is generally less busy than peak summer, so it's a comfortable middle ground. Prices can be easier on your budget than during major holiday periods, though they may rise around Mid-Autumn Festival.

If you hate crowds, avoid the festival's busiest days. Travelling with kids? Nanhu's open paths make a relaxed outing between museum visits.

At Kailuan National Mine Park, set aside time for the underground mine experience, not just the historic buildings. It gives you a clearer sense of Tangshan's coal-mining past.
