Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March to May and September to October are the months to aim for. Our comfort score rates all of them Excellent. April is the pick, with highs around 23°C and cool nights. You can walk the Ancient Lotus Pond Garden (Gulian Chi) and the old Zhili Governor's Office without sweating or shivering.

May gets hot, up to 30°C, but it's still dry and fairly comfortable. March is mild, though mornings can still be frosty and the trees are often bare. Autumn is calmer than spring. September is warmer and a bit damp, while October is crisp and clear, with highs near 21°C.

Baoding is a short high-speed train ride from Beijing and Shijiazhuang. That makes it a popular day trip, so weekends can feel busier at the main sights.

Summer: hot, then properly wet

June is hot, with highs around 34°C, but it's still manageable. July is the wettest month at 191 mm over 17 days, and August isn't far behind. The air turns sticky, and downpours can wash out a day. Our score rates both months Poor.

If you come anyway, plan indoor time in the middle of the afternoon. Try a long lunch of local dishes like donkey meat burgers (*lürou huoshao*). Save the outdoor sights for the morning. For a day out of town, Baiyangdian, the big reed-filled lake in nearby Anxin County, is prettiest in summer when the lotus blooms. Pick a dry spell, because boat trips are miserable in a storm.

Summer is also school-holiday season in China, which usually runs through July and August. Expect more families at the big sights and on the trains.

Winter: cold, dry and quiet

December to February is cold and dry. Nights sit well below freezing, and January drops to -8°C at night. Skies are often hazy, and our score rates these months Poor or Fair. Rain is rare, so you won't get soaked, but the wind can bite.

It's the quiet season. If you hate crowds, you'll have the old city to yourself, and hot noodles feel earned. Chinese New Year, which falls in late January or February, is the exception. Many family-run places close for several days, and trains fill up. Check the date before you book.

November is a decent shoulder month. It's chilly, but mostly dry, and the autumn colour is just fading.
