When to go to Beijing: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April and May are the months most people should aim for. Days are mild to warm, the air is dry, and you can walk the Forbidden City courtyards or the Summer Palace lakeside without suffering. March rates Excellent too, but nights still dip below freezing. April is lovely for blossom in parks like Yuyuantan. By late May it's properly hot in the afternoons.
September and October are just as good. September is warm and a bit muddy after summer rain. October is crisp and clear, and it's the best time to hike the Great Wall at Mutianyu or Jinshanling, when the hills turn gold and red. Fragrant Hills Park is famous for its autumn leaves, usually peaking in late October.
Summer: hot, wet and loud with school kids
June is hot, and July is the wettest month by far, with rain on about half the days. August isn't much drier. Expect sticky afternoons and sudden downpours. Hutong alleys can flood briefly, and the Great Wall gets slippery. Travelling with kids? Summer holidays run through July and August, so the big sights fill with Chinese families. The Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven are busiest then.
Summer does have perks. Evenings by the Houhai lakes are lively, and the heat suits indoor stops like the National Museum. If you must come now, go for June, which is hotter than wet.
Winter: cold, dry and quiet
December to February is bitterly cold, with January lows of -10°C. It's dry and often sunny, though. If you hate crowds, this is your window. You'll get the Great Wall almost to yourself, and a bowl of hot pot or roast duck feels earned. Ice skating on frozen Houhai is a real local habit. Dress seriously for the wind.
Chinese New Year, in late January or February (the date moves each year), is the big exception. Many shops and restaurants shut, and temple fairs at Ditan Park and Longtan Park bring crowds and food stalls. Trains and flights are packed around it.
Two other peak periods matter. Labour Day (1 May) and National Day week (starting 1 October) both fill the sights and push up prices. If you can, go in mid-April, mid-May or early to mid-September instead.
