October suits city walks, temple visits and day trips to the Great Wall. The comfortable weather makes exploring the hutongs—old, narrow lanes—pleasant, especially around Shichahai. Rain is uncommon, but short daylight hours mean your outdoor plans have less room to drift into evening.

Travelling with kids? Keep the Forbidden City visit focused: choose a route through its main halls, rather than trying to see every courtyard. If you're heading to Mutianyu, take the cable car up and walk the wall at your own pace. It saves energy for the steep steps and the views.
