May weather

May is one of Yantai's best months for being outdoors. Afternoons reach about 24°C, while evenings can cool to 13°C. The air is fairly dry, and you'll usually get a good stretch of daylight for exploring.

Rain falls on about seven days, so a shower may interrupt a walk along the coast. It's still a good time for Yantai Mountain, the waterfront and vineyard visits. The sea may feel too chilly for a swim, and June brings warmer weather if beach time is your main goal.

Labour Day and crowds

Labour Day brings a run of public holidays in early May. Yantai's popular sights and rail links can get busier then, and prices may rise around the holiday. Outside that spell, May is generally calmer and better value than the summer high season.

The holiday can still be a good time to see local life, but expect more people around Yantai Mountain and the seaside. For a quieter city break, choose the later part of the month.

A local tip

Take the coastal walk around Yantai Mountain and the old foreign consulates. The sea views and historic buildings make a pleasant outing, but the waterfront can feel cool after sunset.

Travelling with kids? Make the Changyu Wine Culture Museum a rainy-day stop. It's in central Yantai, so you can pair it with a stroll through the old streets when the skies clear. At dinner, try seafood near the coast; May is a lovely time to linger over a meal after a day outside.
