May weather by the coast

May feels mild in Dalian, with average highs of 17°C and lows of 12°C. You'll get long days and plenty of useful sunshine, though rain falls on about seven days. It's a good month for walking the Binhai Road coastal route, visiting Xinghai Square, or exploring Zhongshan Square without summer heat.

The sea is still chilly, so don't plan your visit around swimming at Xinghai Beach. Rain can interrupt coastal walks, and the breeze may feel cool near the water. April is cooler and drier; June is warmer but wetter.

Holiday crowds and costs

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May and brings a rush of domestic visitors. Dalian's waterfront sights and trains can feel busy around the holiday, while hotels may cost more than on ordinary May weekdays. Outside that period, May is generally a quieter shoulder-season choice than peak summer.

If you hate crowds, visit the Binhai Road sights on weekdays and avoid the Labour Day travel rush. Dalian's spring cherry blossoms may also draw visitors to Longwangtang Cherry Blossom Garden; bloom timing varies, so don't count on flowers for a particular day.

What to do in May

May suits a city break with outdoor stops, but keep indoor options in mind if showers roll through. Browse Russian Street, then warm up with a bowl of Dalian seafood noodles. The city's mild spring weather is also more comfortable for the long coastal stretches than the sticky summer months.

A local tip: take the sightseeing bus along Binhai Road, and get off near Tiger Beach Ocean Park if you want to walk part of the coast. The route's cliffs and sea views are the point, but the exposed sections can feel cool when clouds gather.
