Best Time to Visit Lueliang

Spring and early summer: the easy stretch

Lueliang sits high in the Lüliang Mountains in western Shanxi, so winter lingers. March is still chilly at night, but days turn mild and the sky is often clear. April and May are the sweet spot. Afternoons are warm, nights are cool, and rain is light.

June is hotter, with highs around 31°C, but it's still rated Excellent. The air stays fairly dry. It's a good month if you like long, bright days outdoors.

Summer rain and early autumn

July and August are the wet months. July is the wettest, with 128 mm falling on 13 days, and August is close behind. Expect heavy downpours, muggy afternoons and some cloudy days. Mountain roads can get slippery, so leave extra time if you're driving between sights.

September is the surprise. It's still rated Excellent, with comfortable highs around 24°C. It's wetter than spring, though, so keep a rain jacket handy. October is drier and cooler, and it suits quiet walks and village visits.

Winter: cold and quiet

December and January are the coldest and driest months. Highs stay near 1°C, and nights drop to around -10°C in January. December is only a degree milder at night. Snow is light, but the cold is sharp. Both months are rated Poor.

If you hate crowds, winter is the quietest time. But you'll spend most of your day indoors. February and November are Fair and still cold, though they feel less harsh.

Which month for which trip

For sightseeing and hiking, aim for late April, May or early October. Paths are dry and the air is clear. Heading to the old courtyard towns around Lishi or Liulin? Those months are comfortable for slow wandering.

Travelling with kids? June is a good choice. School holidays start in July, so domestic travel picks up then, and the rain makes it a weaker pick. The national holidays in early May and the first week of October bring the biggest crowds across China, so expect fuller roads and busier sights then.

Lueliang is not a big international stop, so "high season" here mostly means those Chinese holiday weeks. Outside them, you'll usually find things calm. Spring Festival in late January or February is the main cultural moment, but it's very cold, and many local businesses close for the break.
