Travelling with kids? Keep Zhengding's outdoor sights to a shorter visit, then warm up with a donkey-meat fire-baked bun, called lǘròu huǒshāo. It's a local Hebei snack, and a handy meal after walking around the old city.

The bun is filling and easy to eat on the go, but choose a warm indoor stop if the evening chill sets in. For a colder day back in Shijiazhuang, spend more time at the Hebei Museum instead of trying to fit in another long outdoor walk.
