Hohhot Weather in November

November is cold but clear

November is the end of autumn in Hohhot, and winter is close behind. It rates 4.8 out of 10, a fair month that's held back mainly by the cold. Days reach about 5°C, but nights drop to around -6°C, and December is colder still. The air is often dry, with plenty of sunshine and little rain, so the weather is more pleasant than the temperatures suggest. You'll feel the chill most when walking across open squares or waiting outside.

Because of that chill, indoor sightseeing works best this month. Spend time at the Inner Mongolia Museum, then visit Dazhao Temple when the sun is out. Long walks on the grasslands are less appealing now, since the cold and bare scenery make them a poor choice for many visitors. If you have the option, May to June and September are the better months to come. Taiyuan (336 km away) and Jinzhong (360 km away) both have good weather right now, so they're worth considering if you're flexible.

Quiet streets, few events

November has no major annual festival that draws visitors to Hohhot. China's Singles' Day falls on November 11, but it's mainly a big online shopping event, not a local celebration. You may see sales in shopping areas, though.

Crowds are usually lighter than during summer and the National Day holiday in October. Because November falls outside Hohhot's best travel months, rooms and tours may cost less than in the busier season. If you hate crowds, it can suit you, as long as you're happy with the cold.

A short day, planned well

There's less daylight than in October, so keep outdoor visits focused. A good plan is Dazhao Temple followed by a warm meal near Saishang Old Street. Try shaomai, Hohhot's steamed dumplings, at a restaurant in the old town.

Travelling with kids? Put the Inner Mongolia Museum in the middle of the day, when the cold can make outdoor stops tiring. It's a useful indoor break, and its exhibits give you a closer look at the region's history and grassland life.
