April: cool, clear days

Families visit graves and travel during the holiday, so popular transport routes and sights can be busier around then.

Crowds and local tips

Outside the Qingming travel rush, April is usually quieter than Hohhot's popular May and June season. You may find less pressure on hotels and attractions than in those warmer months, though prices vary and the holiday can bring a short-lived bump in demand.

If you hate crowds, visit Dazhao Temple on a weekday outside the Qingming break. For a local meal nearby, try shaomai, steamed dumplings often filled with lamb. The warm dish feels especially welcome after an evening walk through the old town.
