April feels like spring

April is one of Bayan Nur's best months for getting outside. Afternoons can feel pleasantly mild, while mornings and evenings are cold, with lows near freezing. Rain is scarce, and you'll get plenty of daylight for a day trip.

The dry air suits walks around the Hetao irrigation district or a visit to the Ulan Buh Desert. But spring can be windy across this open landscape, so desert outings may feel dusty and uncomfortable on blustery days. Save long outdoor plans for calmer weather, and don't expect warm evenings.

What to do

Wuliangsu Lake is a good choice if you're interested in spring birdlife. Migrating birds pass through the wetlands, though sightings depend on conditions. In the city, try a bowl of lamb noodle soup after a day out; it's a local favourite.

April is generally quieter than the summer travel period, and prices are often lower than in busier months. It's still a popular time to visit, though, since April and May are among Bayan Nur's best months. The Qingming break is the main exception: expect more visitors on the holiday itself.
