The long daylight suits visits to the Hetao Plain and outdoor sights. Wuliangsu Lake's wetlands are a good change of pace from the dry landscapes, but avoid planning a full afternoon of exposed sightseeing in the heat. September is cooler and drier, making it a better choice if you want comfortable days outside.

What's on, and how busy it feels

China's summer school holidays usually run through August, so family attractions and transport can feel busier than in spring or September. It's summer high season, though Bayan Nur is less of a tourist hotspot than Inner Mongolia's best-known grassland destinations. Don't expect crowds everywhere, but local trips may be livelier.

Qixi, often called Chinese Valentine's Day, can fall in August. Its date follows the lunar calendar, so it doesn't land in August every year. There isn't a major August festival in Bayan Nur that you can count on annually.

If you hate crowds, September is a calmer bet and brings cooler weather.

Getting around in the heat

August rain is modest, but showers can interrupt a day out. Keep city sightseeing flexible, and save a wet spell for indoor stops rather than a long drive across the plain. The July heat is stronger, while April and May are also among the best months to visit.

For Wuliangsu Lake, plan the outing as a separate trip from Linhe, Bayan Nur's main urban area. It's not a quick stroll from the city centre, and the lake's wetlands are best enjoyed when you're not rushing back between stops.
