Hohhot Weather in March

March feels like a thaw

Hohhot starts to shake off winter in March, but it's still cold, especially after sunset. Days reach about 9°C, while nights can drop below freezing. It's fairly dry, with only a couple of rainy days on average, and you'll get useful daylight for exploring.

Dazhao Temple and the Inner Mongolia Museum work well in this changeable weather. You can duck indoors between sights instead of spending a long stretch outside. Save open grassland trips and long walks for warmer months; March's chilly nights make them less comfortable.

A quiet month

March isn't a peak festival month in Hohhot. International Women's Day is observed on March 8, but it's not a major citywide tourist event. The big seasonal draw of the grasslands, Naadam, comes later in summer.

If you hate crowds, March is a good time to visit. It's usually quieter and less expensive than May and June, or September, when Hohhot is in its best-weather season. You won't get the full green-grassland experience, but museums and city sights feel easier to enjoy without peak-season traffic.

Make the cold work for you

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor visits short, then warm up over a bowl of shaomai, Hohhot's steamed dumplings, near the old city. The Inner Mongolia Museum is another useful stop when the air feels sharp.

For a practical route, pair Dazhao Temple with the nearby old streets around Saishang Old Street. You can keep the outing compact and find food nearby instead of crossing town in the cold. March is warmer than February, but April brings a bigger jump in daytime warmth, so don't expect spring to feel settled yet.
