June weather

June feels warm and sunny in Hohhot, with afternoons reaching 29°C and evenings cooling to around 14°C. It's a good month for walking around Dazhao Temple and the old town, or taking a day trip to the grasslands outside the city. Rain falls on several days, so a shower can interrupt outdoor plans.

You'll get long daylight hours, but don't expect July's heat or rain. June is much drier than July, making it easier to fit sightseeing around the weather. If you're planning a long exposed walk, the afternoon sun can still feel strong.

Events and local life

The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June, though its date changes each year. It's a public holiday across China, so travel can briefly get busier around the holiday. You may spot zongzi, sticky rice parcels wrapped in leaves, in local shops.

Hohhot's big grassland Naadam celebrations are usually later in summer, not a reliable June event. If you're visiting for one, check the dates before choosing your month.

Crowds and tips

June is a strong time to visit, but it's generally calmer than July, when school holidays and warmer, wetter weather bring more summer travel. Prices are usually less pressured than in July, though the Dragon Boat Festival can be an exception. May is quieter and cooler; September is another popular month.

If you hate crowds, June is a good middle ground before the main school-holiday rush. At Dazhao Temple, look for the silver Buddha statue, then try a bowl of shaomai nearby. These steamed dumplings are a Hohhot speciality, and lunch is a cosy plan if a shower rolls through.
