October days outdoors

October feels crisp and mostly dry in Taiyuan. Afternoons are mild, but mornings and evenings can feel cold, so sightseeing is more comfortable once the day warms up. With plenty of sun and little rain, it's a good month for walking around Jinci Temple or exploring the Shanxi Museum. You can also enjoy an outdoor stroll without summer's sticky heat. Save longer walks for the middle of the day, and don't count on a warm evening outdoors.

If you're keen on hiking, clear autumn days can suit a trip to Mount Tianlong, though the cooler air makes a long climb feel harder.

Holiday crowds

China's National Day holiday begins on October 1 and brings a busy travel week. Popular sights and trains can get crowded, and hotel prices often rise around the holiday. The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in October, too, but its date changes each year.

Outside those holiday periods, Taiyuan is generally calmer than during peak holiday travel. October is still a popular month, thanks to comfortable autumn weather, so expect more visitors than in the colder months. If you hate crowds, plan your Jinci Temple visit for a weekday outside the National Day break.

A local pause

October's cooler evenings are a good excuse to try Taiyuan's knife-cut noodles, called dao xiao mian. The chewy noodles are shaved straight into boiling broth, making a filling stop after a day outside.

At Jinci Temple, allow time to wander beyond the main halls. The old cypress trees and quiet courtyards make a welcome change from the busy streets of central Taiyuan. Travelling with kids? The temple grounds offer room to explore, but keep an eye on little feet around steps and stone paths.
