Visiting Taiyuan in August
August weather in Taiyuan
August is hot and often damp, so you'll want to plan around the rain. Afternoons can feel sticky, with highs around 30°C, and rain falls on about 14 days. Showers can interrupt outdoor plans, which means Jinci Temple's gardens and old halls are best enjoyed when the skies are clear. If the weather turns, save the Shanxi Museum for a wet spell or for the hottest part of the day.
Evenings are cooler, so a walk along the Fen River is often more pleasant. Still, avoid planning a full day outdoors without room to change course. July is hotter and wetter, while September is cooler and drier, which is why the page's best months are April to May and September to October.
Crowds and events
There's no fixed nationwide public holiday in August, but Chinese school summer holidays bring families to Taiyuan. Expect more visitors and firmer hotel prices than in the quieter shoulder months of April, May, September and October. Even so, the city rarely feels as packed as it does during major holiday travel periods.
If crowds bother you, try visiting Jinci on a weekday and keep your plans flexible around the rain. Qixi, a traditional Chinese festival, sometimes falls in August, but its date shifts each year, so check the calendar before you count on it.
August in Taiyuan: local tips
Travelling with kids? Keep the Shanxi Museum in reserve for a rainy afternoon, since its galleries cover the region's long history. On a clear day, take your time at Jinci rather than rushing between its outdoor courtyards.
When you need a break, look for a noodle shop serving Taiyuan-style knife-cut noodles, called dao xiao mian. The thick, chewy noodles make a satisfying meal after a damp walk. If Jinci is your main outing, check the current bus route from central Taiyuan before you set off, since services can change.
