February: deep winter

February in Ordos is properly cold: afternoons hover around freezing, and nights drop well below it. The air is fairly dry, with little rain, but that doesn't make long outdoor visits comfortable. You'll get some sun, yet the short winter day leaves less time for sightseeing.

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan can still work if you keep outdoor viewing brief and spend more time indoors. Save long walks across open grassland for warmer months; wind can make exposed places feel especially harsh. Around Kangbashi, you can see the city's wide streets and public buildings, but outdoor wandering is best kept short.

Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival, often falls in February, though its date changes each year. Families travel to celebrate, so transport can be busy around the holiday itself. Ordos isn't one of China's best-known festival destinations, and you shouldn't count on a major public event being on.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the main holiday dates. Outside that period, February is usually quieter than the popular May-to-June and September travel seasons. Winter is low season, so stays may cost less than in those busier months, though holiday travel can affect availability and prices.

Make the cold work

February suits a short city break more than a trip built around hiking or grassland scenery. Indoor stops and short outings fit the weather better; skip plans that depend on spending hours outside. The cold can also make waiting outdoors for transport unpleasant.

Travelling with kids? Keep outings around Kangbashi brief, then warm up indoors before heading out again. For a practical route, base yourself in Dongsheng if you want more everyday city services, and use a taxi to reach Kangbashi's sights rather than relying on a long walk between the districts.
