October weather in Ordos

October feels like a crisp autumn visit, with afternoons reaching 15°C and nights dropping to 2°C. The air is fairly dry, and rain is limited, so you can spend comfortable days exploring the Genghis Khan Mausoleum or walking around Kangbashi's broad plazas. Bring a warm coat for evenings, especially if you're staying out to see the city lights.

The days are shorter than in summer, but there's still plenty of daylight for a visit to the mausoleum or a drive towards the Kubuqi Desert. October's cooler weather suits sightseeing better than long days on exposed dunes. Skip a full day on the Ordos Grassland if you're hoping for lush green scenery; autumn has taken much of that colour away.

National Day and crowds

China's National Day holiday begins on October 1 and includes the busy Golden Week travel period. Ordos can see more domestic visitors then, with fuller attractions and higher hotel prices than in quieter autumn weeks. Outside the holiday, crowds and prices usually ease. Summer is also a busier time for grassland trips, so October after Golden Week can feel calmer.

If you hate crowds, visit Kangbashi or the Genghis Khan Mausoleum after the holiday week.

Make the most of your visit

October is a good month for city sights, museums and short outdoor outings, but don't expect beach weather or warm evenings. The nearby Xiangshawan, also called Resonant Sand Bay, is a better fit for a focused desert visit than an all-day trek across open sand.

For a local stop, try Ordos-style hand-pulled mutton noodles in Dongsheng after a day out. Ask your hotel about the best route to Xiangshawan before setting off: it's outside the city, and the desert attraction works best as a planned day trip rather than a quick detour.
