October: crisp autumn days

October brings clear, cool weather to Baotou. Afternoons reach about 16°C, but nights can drop to 2°C, so sightseeing feels best in the middle of the day. Rain is limited, and the bright skies suit a walk through Saihantala Urban Grassland or a visit to Wudangzhao Monastery.

You'll get less rain than in September, but it's much cooler. Long outdoor stops can feel chilly once the sun dips, and grassland trips are less comfortable then. Save evening plans for Baotou's city centre, where you can warm up with a bowl of Mongolian hot pot.

National Day crowds

China's National Day holiday runs from October 1 to 7. Baotou can draw more domestic visitors during this week, and hotels and transport may cost more than in quieter parts of the month. Wudangzhao is a popular day trip, so expect more company there over the holiday.

If you hate crowds, travel after the holiday. October is generally calmer and less costly than the busy National Day period, though September is also a popular month to visit Baotou. Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in October, but its date changes each year.

A good month for city sights

With around eight hours of sun a day, October works well for Baotou's museums and outdoor sights. The city's autumn air makes walking around Saihantala more pleasant than in summer, but the grassland can feel cold late in the day.

Travelling with kids? Keep Saihantala for a sunny afternoon, then head back before the temperature drops. For a local meal, try Baotou shaomai, steamed dumplings often served for breakfast. Check whether a nearby shaomai restaurant is open in the morning; many are known for breakfast rather than dinner.
