September: mild autumn days

September is one of Baotou's best months to visit. Days reach about 24°C, while evenings cool to around 10°C. The air is fairly dry, and rain comes on several days, so you may get a passing shower.

It's comfortable for walking around Saihantala Ecological Park or visiting the Baotou Museum without August's heavier heat and rain. Save long outdoor plans for a dry day, and don't expect warm evenings after sunset.

Holidays and quieter streets

The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September; its date changes each year. It's a family holiday, so some shops and restaurants may close or get busy around the festival. Check local opening hours if your visit overlaps.

If you hate crowds, September is a good choice compared with the busier summer holiday period. It's also generally calmer than the National Day holiday period in early October. Prices can be easier than in peak summer, though festival travel may raise demand.

A useful local tip

Travelling with kids? Saihantala's open grassland and paths make an easy outing, but the cool evening air can cut a park visit short. Go in the afternoon, when the sun is still warm, and leave time to get back before dusk.

For a city meal, try shaomai, a steamed dumpling associated with Inner Mongolia. September's mild weather suits a walk through the older parts of town before dinner. October is cooler and drier, so September gives you a better balance for outdoor sightseeing.
