Visiting Xiamen in June
June: warm and very wet
June feels hot, sticky and cloudy in Xiamen. Days reach 29°C, while nights stay warm at 25°C. Rain falls on 22 days, and the air is humid, so even a short walk can feel tiring. May is a little cooler and drier; July is hotter but gets less rain.
You can still enjoy shaded streets around Zhongshan Road, or take in Xiamen University between showers. Keep beach time flexible, and don't count on long, clear views from Gulangyu. Hiking up to Sunlight Rock can be slippery after rain, so choose a dry spell rather than forcing the climb.
Rain, boats and local plans
June is part of Xiamen's summer, but it's not the easiest month for outdoor sightseeing. Try indoor stops such as the Fujian-Taiwan Kinmen Folk Culture Museum, then save seaside walks for brighter breaks. If you hate crowds, June is usually calmer than the October-to-January best-visit period, and it comes before the main July and August school-holiday rush. Prices are generally less pressured than in those busier months, though weekends can still draw visitors.
The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in June. If it does, look out for local celebrations and dragon boat races; the festival date changes each year. Travelling with kids? A rainy afternoon at Xiamen Science and Technology Museum is easier than waiting out a downpour on the waterfront.
A useful Gulangyu tip
For Gulangyu, take the ferry from the Xiamen International Cruise Center, not the downtown ferry terminal used by locals. Rain can disrupt a day built around the island, so keep your return flexible and avoid squeezing in a fixed-time plan afterward. Carry a small umbrella for the walk between the ferry and the island's lanes. After a wet outing, try satay noodles, a local favourite, near Zhongshan Road.
