Visiting Xiamen in May
May weather in Xiamen
May feels warm, sticky and often damp. Days reach about 27°C, and rain falls on 19 days on average. Cloud and humidity can make long walks feel tiring, while showers may interrupt plans on Gulangyu Island.
You'll still have plenty of daylight for the Nanputuo Temple area or a stroll along Huandao Road. Keep indoor stops, such as the Xiamen Museum, in mind for wet spells. Skip plans that depend on clear sea views if the forecast looks unsettled.
Holidays and crowds
The May Day holiday brings a rush of domestic visitors to Xiamen. Gulangyu's lanes and ferry terminals can feel especially crowded, and hotel prices often rise around the holiday. Outside that peak, May is generally less busy than the popular October-to-January period.
If you hate crowds, avoid Gulangyu during the May Day break and visit on a weekday later in the month instead.
The Dragon Boat Festival sometimes falls in May, though its date changes each year. If it does, you may find dragon boat races and holiday crowds; don't assume the festival is in May every year.
Make the most of your visit
May is wetter than April, and June is warmer and wetter still. That makes May a workable month for a city break, but not the easiest choice for beach days or exposed coastal walks. Keep your plans flexible when rain sets in.
For Gulangyu, take the ferry from the Xiamen International Cruise Center, not the old ferry terminal used by locals. During May Day, allow extra time for the crossing and crowds. If rain is falling, Nanputuo Temple's covered halls offer a calmer stop than a long walk along the shore.
