Xiamen Weather in August

August feels sticky

Xiamen in August is hot, humid and often rainy. Afternoons reach 31°C, while nights stay warm at 26°C. Rain falls on 19 days, and the air can feel heavy even between showers.

You can still enjoy Gulangyu's old lanes, but long walks feel tiring in the heat. Save exposed sights for cooler parts of the day, and use rainy spells for the Xiamen Museum or a meal of shacha noodles. Beach time is possible, though sudden showers can interrupt it. August is also typhoon season, so ferry trips may be disrupted.

Summer holidays and crowds

China's school summer break brings more families to Xiamen. Gulangyu and the waterfront can feel crowded, and hotel prices are generally higher than in the quieter months from October to January.

Qixi, often called Chinese Valentine's Day, falls in the seventh lunar month and can land in August. Couples may mark it with dinner or gifts, but it isn't a large, fixed Xiamen festival. Don't expect a citywide event on a set date.

If you hate crowds, August may frustrate you; September is a little cooler and less rainy, though it's still a busy travel period.

Make the island trip easier

Travelling with kids? Keep Gulangyu to a short visit, with a café break between the lanes and the Piano Museum. The island has no cars, so getting around means walking.

Check ferry notices before heading to the Xiamen ferry terminal. Heavy rain or typhoon conditions can affect sailings, and a cancelled crossing can disrupt your day. For a calmer city break, choose October to January instead.
