Visiting Xiamen in January
January feels mild
January is winter in Xiamen, but it's usually mild rather than cold. Highs reach 18°C and lows drop to about 10°C. Rain falls on around six days, and cloud is common, so the light can shift quickly. That makes January one of the best months to visit, with December a close second. February is a little wetter, so if you're weighing those two, January is the safer pick.
The mild weather suits slow walks around Gulangyu Island or through the old lanes near Zhongshan Road. The sea is too cool for most beach swims, though, and on a damp, grey day a long beach visit can lose its appeal. If you're hoping for bright views from Sunlight Rock, leave yourself a flexible day for the island.
Holidays and crowds
Those flexible days matter most around the holidays. New Year's Day is a public holiday, and Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, though its date changes each year. When it does, expect more domestic visitors, busy transport and some closures. Check the calendar for your year before you settle on dates.
If you dislike crowds, avoid Gulangyu during the Chinese New Year rush and go on a quieter weekday instead. Outside the holiday, January is generally less hectic than peak summer, which is one reason it sits within Xiamen's October-to-January best season. Prices can climb during holiday travel, so don't assume the whole month is equally quiet.
January in Xiamen: local tips
Cooler weather suits a full city day. Stroll Zhongshan Road, stop for local peanut soup, then take in the sea views from the waterfront. Rain won't usually ruin a visit, but it can make exposed coastal walks less pleasant, so save those for a clearer spell.
For Gulangyu, take the ferry from the tourist terminal at Dongdu, not the old ferry pier by Zhongshan Road. The old pier is mainly for local residents, and using the wrong terminal can cost you time. Check your ticket's departure point before you set out.
