December is calmer than summer and the busy National Day period in October. It falls within Xiamen's comfortable travel season, though, so popular sights can still draw visitors on weekends. Prices are often gentler than during peak holiday periods, but don't expect the whole city to feel empty.

For Gulangyu, use the ferry terminal serving visitors from the Dongdu area, not the local-only route from the old ferry pier. Check your ticket's departure pier before setting out; getting to the wrong terminal can cost you time. The island is easier to enjoy on a weekday, when its narrow lanes are less crowded.
