Mild days, cool evenings

December in Quanzhou feels cool rather than bitter, with daytime highs around 18°C and lows near 10°C. Rain falls on about six days, and the air can feel damp, so a cloudy spell may make evenings chilly. It's a comfortable month for walking between Kaiyuan Temple, West Street and the old lanes. You'll get less sunshine than in brighter months, so keep beach plans flexible; the coast can feel too cool for a swim.

Winter solstice traditions

The winter solstice falls in December, though its date changes each year. In southern Fujian, families often mark it by eating tangyuan, chewy rice balls served in sweet soup. It's a lovely time to try them in Quanzhou, but don't expect a large public festival across the city. For travellers who prefer calm streets to holiday queues, December is a good fit. Quanzhou is still a popular winter destination, but it's generally less busy than during national holiday weeks. The weather suits temple visits and a stroll along West Street, while wet days are better spent inside the Maritime Museum of Quanzhou or sampling local food. Try mianxian hu, a thin noodle soup, near West Street. At Kaiyuan Temple, visit the twin stone pagodas in daylight, then duck into the covered arcades nearby if rain starts.
