October weather

October feels warm rather than summery. Quanzhou averages a high of 27°C, and afternoons can still feel sticky with humidity at 79%. Rain is much lighter than in September, with 53 mm across six days, so you'll usually have plenty of dry time for walking.

The old lanes around West Street, Kaiyuan Temple and Qingjing Mosque suit October's milder days. You can also take a coastal trip to Chongwu Ancient City, though a wet spell may make the sea views less clear. Save long outdoor walks for dry weather, and don't count on a cool evening just yet.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday brings a major travel rush at the start of October. Quanzhou's temples and West Street can feel packed, and trains and hotels often cost more than on ordinary days. If Mid-Autumn Festival falls in October, expect another busy holiday period; its date changes each year.

Outside those holiday weeks, crowds ease and October is a comfortable month for sightseeing. It's part of Quanzhou's best season, so it's not as quiet as the wet summer months, but you can enjoy the city without the holiday crush.

Families with school-age children may find the first week lively but tiring; a later October visit is calmer.

A local tip

At Kaiyuan Temple, look up at the twin stone pagodas, then wander into the lanes around West Street for a bowl of mianxian hu, a thin noodle soup often served with oysters. It's a good rainy-day stop, too: you can duck inside for lunch while a shower passes. For a quieter temple visit, go outside the National Day holiday, when tour groups are less likely to fill the courtyards.
