Autumn and winter: the best stretch

From October to January, Quanzhou is at its easiest. October is the driest month, with only six rainy days, and it still feels warm. By December and January, days are mild and evenings are cool enough for a light jacket. Skies are often grey, though, so don't expect much blue.

This is the time for walking. You can wander the old lanes around Zhongshan Road, visit Kaiyuan Temple with its two stone pagodas, and stroll to the Qingjing Mosque, one of China's oldest. You can also take the short ride out to Qingyuan Mountain without sweating through your shirt. Hungry? Try oyster omelette and satay noodles (sha cha mian) at a street stall.

February to April: damp and moody

February is still rated Excellent, but the rain starts to build. March is Good, and April slips to Poor with rain on half the days. Mist hangs over the hills and the air feels clammy.

Lunar New Year usually lands in late January or February, and the Lantern Festival follows about two weeks later. Quanzhou's lantern displays are a real draw. Expect a lively mood in the old town, and many shops closed for the first few days. Trains and buses fill up as people head home, so travel around the holiday is tough. If you want the festival feel without wet days, early February is a fair bet.

May to September: hot, wet and sticky

June is the wettest month, with rain on 22 days. May and August also get a lot. Nights stay warm, and humidity sits close to 90% in June. Afternoons feel heavy, and showers can be sudden.

July is the brightest month, with the most sun, so it's the pick if you must come in summer. Even so, it's hot and muggy. Typhoon season runs through late summer and early autumn, so watch forecasts if you travel then. Plans can shift quickly.

Summer school holidays bring more domestic visitors, though Quanzhou is quieter than Xiamen, a couple of hours down the coast. Travelling with kids? Aim for indoor stops like the Maritime Museum, which covers the city's old trading history, and save outdoor sights for the morning.

If you hate crowds and damp, skip May to September. Pick late October or November for the best balance of dry days, soft warmth and quieter streets.
