Best Time to Visit Taichung

November to February: cool, dry and easy

This is the best stretch, and the data agrees. Days are mild, from the mid-20s down to the high teens at night. December is the driest month, with only 6 rainy days. Nights can feel chilly in January, so you'll want a jacket for evenings at Fengjia Night Market.

It's also the best time for walking. You can stroll the Rainbow Village (Cai Hong Jiancun), cycle the Dongfeng Bikeway, or wander the Gaomei Wetlands without sweating through your shirt. The sky is often grey, though, and sun is limited to about 3 hours a day. Sunsets at Gaomei can be hit or miss.

Lunar New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many small shops close for a few days, and trains and highways fill up. The Taichung Lantern Festival often runs around the same time and draws big crowds, so expect packed trains.

March to April and October: the shoulder months

Spring warms up fast. March is pleasant, but rain shows up on 11 days. By April it's warmer and wetter, with 12 rainy days. Showers tend to be short, so it's still a good time for the city's museums and cafés. Try the National Museum of Natural Science, the Calligraphy Greenway and the Miyahara dessert shop, famous for ice cream in a former eye clinic.

October is a quiet favourite. Rain drops to 7 days and the heat eases. It's a nice month for day trips to Sun Moon Lake or the tea hills near Alishan. Typhoon season can linger early in the month, so keep your plans flexible.

May to September: hot, wet and sticky

Rain peaks here. May starts the plum rain season (meiyu), a long stretch of showers. June has 20 rainy days. August is the wettest month at 331 mm, with 21 rainy days. Humidity sits above 80% for much of this time, so afternoons feel heavy.

Summer is also typhoon season. A storm can close trains, shut attractions and cancel flights for a day or two. Travelling with kids? Summer school holidays run roughly July and August, so family spots like Taichung Park and Calligraphy Greenway get busier, though still manageable.

If you must come now, plan indoor stops for the afternoon, like the National Taichung Theater. July has the most sun of the wet months, at 4.9 hours a day, which makes it the best of a tricky bunch.
