November to March: the easy months
This is the time to come if you want to walk. Days are mild, and rain is light. December is the driest month, with only 5 rainy days. It can feel grey, since sun hours drop to around five a day, but that's fine for temples and long food crawls.
Spend your days on foot around the old centre. Visit Chihkan Tower, the Confucius Temple and Anping Old Fort. Then eat your way down Shennong Street and through the lanes near Guohua Street. Try danzai noodles, milkfish soup and coffin bread (a thick fried toast bowl filled with creamy stew). Evenings are cool enough for a light jacket, but not cold.
Lunar New Year usually lands in late January or February. Many family-run shops close for a few days, and trains and roads fill up with people heading home. Temples, though, are packed and lively. The Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival, a short trip north, takes place around the Lantern Festival. It's loud and a little risky, so wear a helmet and thick clothes if you go close.
April and October: shoulder months
Both months are warm and mostly manageable. April brings 11 rainy days, and showers tend to be short. October is drier, with 8 rainy days, and the sea breeze helps in the afternoon. They suit you if you'd like a quieter city without giving up much comfort.
Typhoon season runs through early autumn, so October can still bring a storm. Keep your plans loose around Anping Harbour and the Cigu lagoons, where birdwatching and oyster farm tours depend on the weather.
May to September: hot, wet and sticky
Be honest with yourself about this stretch. Highs sit near 30°C, and nights stay warm at 28°C from June to August. Humidity is high, so the air feels heavy even when it isn't raining. August is the wettest month, with 440 mm over 22 days. June is close behind.
Rain often arrives as heavy afternoon bursts. Do your temple visits in the morning, then duck into a café or the National Museum of Taiwan Literature when the sky opens. Typhoons are possible, and they can shut down trains and flights for a day or two.
Taiwanese school holidays run through July and August, so family spots like Anping get busier. Hotels in Tainan stay quieter than in beach resorts, though. If you hate crowds and can handle the heat, the summer months do have lower demand.
