May: heat and showers

May feels hot and sticky in Tainan, with highs around 29°C and humidity at 82%. Rain falls on 17 days, and cloudy skies are common. Showers can interrupt a walk, but they don't usually rule out a whole day.

You'll still have long daylight for Anping Fort and the old streets around it. Save indoor stops, such as the Chimei Museum, for the wettest part of the day. A long, exposed walk at noon is less pleasant; June gets even wetter, so May is the easier of the two months for outdoor plans.

Events and local days

Taiwan's Labor Day falls on May 1. It's a day off for many workers, though not a nationwide holiday for everyone, so some local services may change.

Tainan's Dragon Boat Championship is held around the Dragon Boat Festival, whose date shifts each year on the lunar calendar. It can fall in May or June. If the races are on during your visit, expect local spectators near the water, but don't assume they'll happen in May.

Crowds and practical tips

May is warmer and wetter than April, and the rainy season is building toward June. It's generally quieter than Tainan's cooler December-to-February peak, with fewer winter visitors and often better value for stays. Rain and humidity are the trade-off.

If you hate crowds, May can suit you better than winter, though holiday weekends still draw local visitors. At Anping Tree House, watch your footing on the damp wooden paths after rain. Then duck into nearby Anping Old Street for a bowl of shrimp rolls or oyster omelette while a shower passes.
