May: warm and wet

May in Quanzhou feels warm, damp and often cloudy. Days reach 27°C, while evenings stay mild. Rain falls on 19 days, and the humidity is high, so sightseeing can feel sticky. You'll still get plenty of daylight, but don't count on long, sunny stretches.

Kaiyuan Temple and the lanes around West Street work well for shorter outings between showers. Save Qingyuan Mountain's trails for a dry spell; wet paths can be slippery. Beach days are less reliable, and heavy rain can make a long day outdoors tiring.

Holidays and crowds

China's Labour Day holiday falls in May and brings a rush of domestic visitors. Quanzhou's popular sights and West Street can feel crowded then, with higher hotel rates than on ordinary May weekdays.

Outside the holiday, May is generally quieter and less expensive than the popular October-to-January period. For budget travellers, a weekday visit outside the holiday is a calmer bet, with more room to explore the old city.

Make rain work for you

May is wetter than April, and June is wetter still. Rather than planning every day around outdoor sights, keep a flexible route through Quanzhou's historic centre. Duck into Kaiyuan Temple or nearby shops when showers pass, then return to West Street for a bowl of mianxianhu, a local thick rice-noodle soup.

A practical local tip: use West Street as your rainy-day base. Many sights and food stops are close together, so you can shorten your walk if the rain gets heavy. Check the paving after a downpour, though; slick lanes are no fun in a hurry.
