Visiting New Taipei City in May
May feels warm and damp
May brings warm days, sticky air and frequent rain. Showers can interrupt plans, and cloud often hides the mountain views. April is drier, while June is hotter and wetter, so May sits between the two. Keep outdoor plans flexible.
You can still explore the city's covered spots, including Banqiao's Lin Family Mansion and Garden, or take the MRT to Tamsui for riverside cafés between showers. Long hikes in Yangmingshan are less appealing when trails are wet and views are cloudy. New Taipei's coast can feel grey, too.
Festivals and local days
The New Taipei City Hakka Tung Blossom Festival often runs across April and May. It's a good reason to visit forest paths around Sanxia, where white tung flowers may carpet the ground. The exact timing varies with the blooms, and rain can make trails slippery.
May 1 is Labour Day in Taiwan, though it's a holiday mainly for workers covered by the rules. Some businesses may close, but it isn't a city-wide break. The Dragon Boat Festival can fall in May or June, depending on the lunar calendar; if it does, you may see races and rice dumplings called zongzi.
Crowds and a useful tip
May is spring shoulder season, not the busiest time for New Taipei. Visitor numbers are generally lower than in the popular November-to-March stretch, and stays may cost less than in peak months. Rain helps thin out outdoor spots, but Tamsui can still draw day-trippers on weekends.
If you hate crowds, go to Tamsui on a rainy weekday and spend time around the Old Street arcades rather than the exposed waterfront. Travelling with kids? The New Taipei City Hakka Museum in Sanxia offers an indoor stop when showers set in.
