March feels damp

March brings mild spring weather to New Taipei City, but it's often cloudy and damp. Highs reach 22°C and lows dip to 15°C. Rain falls on 17 days, so expect showers to interrupt some outdoor plans.

It's a good month for city walks between showers. Browse the shops and snack stalls on Tamsui Old Street, or visit the riverside when the sky clears. The hills around Jiufen can feel misty, which suits its old lanes but makes distant views less reliable. Save a long beach day or exposed hike for a clearer forecast.

Festivals and quieter days

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is held around the Lantern Festival, whose date changes each year. It can fall in March, but often takes place in February, so check the festival dates for your travel year. Lanterns are released in Pingxi, a mountain district in New Taipei City.

If you hate crowds, avoid festival evening in Pingxi and choose a weekday for Tamsui. March is near the end of the November-to-March period that's considered best for visiting. It's generally less busy than peak holiday periods, and prices may ease after Lunar New Year. Weekends can still draw local visitors to popular sights.

Make rain work for you

With little daily sunshine on average, keep an indoor stop handy. The Tamsui ferry is a useful option when the weather is clear, but rain and cloud can make the river ride less appealing. Around Tamsui Old Street, try a-gei: tofu stuffed with glass noodles and served with sauce.

Travelling with kids? Pair the ferry with a short Old Street visit, rather than building the whole day around river views. Carry a small umbrella for the walk between the station and the waterfront; showers are common, even when the morning looks fine.
