September: warm and damp

September still feels like summer in New Taipei City. Days are warm and sticky, and rain falls often, with cloudy skies common. It's cooler and less rainy than August, but wetter and warmer than October. Sightseeing around Tamsui Old Street can work between showers, and indoor stops like the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum are handy when rain sets in.

Long walks on exposed trails can feel tiring in the humidity. Skip a fixed plan for the coast or mountain paths, since showers can disrupt the day. If you head to Jiufen, its steep lanes can get slippery when wet.

Mid-Autumn plans

The Mid-Autumn Festival often falls in September, though its date changes each year. Families gather for mooncakes and barbecues, and the holiday can make popular areas busier. Taiwan's Ghost Month may also overlap, depending on the lunar calendar.

If you hate crowds, avoid travelling on the Mid-Autumn holiday itself. Check the calendar before choosing your dates, as the festival doesn't always land in September.

Quieter than peak season

September is generally a quieter choice than November to March, New Taipei City's best months overall. You'll likely find fewer visitors than in the cooler high season, though holiday weekends can be busy. It's also a useful time for a city break if you can be flexible around rain.

For a practical rainy-day plan, take the MRT to Tamsui and explore the Old Street near the station. If showers ease, stroll along the riverfront; don't count on a ferry crossing, as weather can affect service.
