Visiting New Taipei City in January
January feels damp and cool
January is New Taipei City's winter: mild, but often grey and clammy. Expect rain on many days, high humidity and little sunshine. The air can feel cooler than the thermometer suggests, especially beside the Tamsui River.
It's a good month for indoor stops, including the Gold Museum in Jiufen and the National Center for Traditional Arts in Yilan? No: that's outside New Taipei. Instead, explore the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, then browse Yingge's pottery street. Save long coastal walks for clearer spells; wet paths around Jiufen can be slippery.
Holidays and crowds
Lunar New Year sometimes falls in January, though it can also land in February. When it does, expect busy transport and holiday closures. Temples and markets may draw more visitors before the holiday, while some family-run shops close during it.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Lunar New Year travel rush and visit Tamsui Old Street on a weekday. Outside the holiday, January is generally quieter than warmer, busier travel periods. Prices can be less pressured, but don't count on that during the holiday itself.
Make the weather work
January's rain doesn't rule out a good visit. You can still wander Sanxia's Qingshui Zushi Temple or eat around Banqiao, then duck indoors when showers set in. For a warmer break, Wulai's hot springs suit a damp afternoon.
Travelling with kids? Yingge's pottery displays make a handy rainy-day plan. One local tip: take the bus from Xindian to Wulai, and keep the hot-spring stop flexible. The mountain road can feel especially gloomy in low cloud, so check conditions before heading out.
