New Taipei City Weather in December

Mild, grey days

December feels cool rather than cold, with highs around 19°C. But rain falls on many days, the sky is often cloudy, and sunshine is limited. You'll be glad of indoor stops between walks: explore the National Taiwan Museum's New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, or duck into a café in Banqiao. For a clearer outdoor outing, head to Tamsui's waterfront when the weather allows. Skip long, exposed hikes if the forecast looks wet; muddy paths and low cloud can spoil the views.

Christmasland crowds

New Taipei City Christmasland fills Banqiao with lights, displays and performances in December. It's a fun evening out, especially around the plaza by Banqiao Station, but expect crowds near the main displays. Travelling with kids? Go on a weekday evening, when the walkways are usually easier to manage. Christmas and New Year bring a festive feel, though Taiwan's biggest family travel rush is usually around Lunar New Year, not December.

Getting around in the rain

December is cooler and drier than November, though it's still damp compared with January. Visitor numbers and hotel prices can vary by date; Christmasland makes Banqiao busier than quieter parts of New Taipei City, while December is generally less of a peak than Lunar New Year. If you hate crowds, stay outside the main Christmasland area and ride the MRT in. Banqiao Station connects several rail and metro lines, so you can leave the displays quickly when the rain sets in.
