Mild days out

December is one of Tainan's best months for walking around. Days feel mild, and rain is limited, so you can explore Anping Old Fort, temples and the lanes around Shennong Street without summer's sticky heat. The evenings stay comfortable, too.

You'll get some cloud, but there's still plenty of sunshine for outdoor plans. A short shower is possible, so keep indoor stops like the Chimei Museum in mind. The weather also suits a visit to Anping Tree House, where the old warehouse is wrapped in banyan roots. Save long, exposed walks for a dry spell.

Holiday season

Christmas and New Year bring festive displays and local celebrations, though Tainan isn't known for a major December festival on the scale of its Lantern Festival. Around the winter solstice, many Taiwanese families eat tangyuan, chewy rice balls served in sweet soup. Look for them at local dessert shops.

If you hate crowds, visit popular sights on weekdays. December is part of Tainan's pleasant high season, so it's busier than the hot, wet summer months. The Christmas and New Year holiday period can draw more visitors, and room prices may rise then. Outside those dates, the city often feels relaxed rather than packed.

Cooler weather makes a food-focused day easier: wander the West Central District and stop for danzai noodles, a Tainan specialty with shrimp and minced pork. You can also enjoy the city's outdoor markets without wilting in the heat.

Travelling with kids? December's milder afternoons make Anping a comfortable outing. Take the Tainan Bus to Anping, then walk between the Old Fort, Anping Tree House and the waterfront. Check the route before setting out, since bus services and stops can change. Keep tangyuan in mind for a seasonal treat, especially around the winter solstice.
