Fuzhou Weather in January

January feels cool and damp

Fuzhou's winter is mild, but January can feel chilly when the air is damp and cloudy. Expect highs near 15°C and lows around 7°C, with rain on several days. It's cooler and slightly drier than February, though December is a little warmer and drier.

The weather works well for wandering the covered lanes of Sanfang Qixiang, or Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, and visiting indoor sights. You can still walk around West Lake Park, but grey skies may hide distant views. Skip plans that depend on a sunny beach day.

Holiday timing matters

Laba Festival, a traditional day before Lunar New Year, can fall in January. Lunar New Year itself sometimes does too, but its date changes each year. Around the holiday, transport and popular sights can get busier as people visit family. Outside that period, January is generally quieter than Fuzhou's popular October-to-December season.

If you hate crowds, choose January dates away from Lunar New Year. Prices are often lower than in the peak autumn months, but can rise around the holiday, so check your exact dates.

Make a cosy city break

Travelling with kids? Sanfang Qixiang is an easy place to dip into shops and courtyards between showers. Fuzhou's local fish balls make a warming meal; look for them in a busy noodle shop near the old lanes.

For a local-weather fix, try Fuzhou's hot springs. The city is known for them, and a soak feels especially welcome after a cool, damp walk. January brings limited sunshine, so keep outdoor plans flexible and save West Lake Park or a Gushan outing for a clearer spell.
