Visiting Taichung in September
September: hot and sticky
September still feels like summer in Taichung. Days reach 31°C, nights stay warm, and humidity makes walking around feel tiring. Rain falls on about half the days, often interrupting outdoor plans. It's less wet than August, but showers can still disrupt a full day out.
The National Taichung Theater is a good indoor stop when the skies open. You can also browse the shops and cafés in Calligraphy Greenway, then duck inside if rain starts. Save long hikes and exposed sightseeing for a clearer day; wet paths and sticky afternoons can make both a slog.
Festivals and crowds
The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September, though its date changes each year. Families gather for barbecues and share pomelos, a large citrus fruit. Expect more local travel around the holiday, and check the calendar before choosing your dates.
If you hate crowds, September is generally quieter than Taichung's popular November-to-February period. It's also outside the main cool-season rush, so accommodation can be easier to find and may cost less. The festival itself can bring a short-lived spike in demand.
Make rain work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop in reserve for rainy afternoons. The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, near Calligraphy Greenway, makes a useful change of pace from outdoor sights.
For a local break between showers, try a Taichung sun cake from a bakery near Taichung Station. These flaky pastries make an easy snack while you wait for the weather to clear. If you're heading to Gaomei Wetlands, don't count on a long, dry sunset visit; rain and cloud can spoil the view. October is drier, while November to February is a better bet for comfortable sightseeing.
