Shantou Weather in December

December: mild and mostly dry

December feels comfortably cool in Shantou. Days reach about 20°C, while evenings can feel chilly at 13°C. Rain is limited to around five days, so you can wander the old town and its arcades without often ducking indoors. Clearer spells also suit a trip to Queshi Scenic Area, where you can walk among the hills and look back across the bay.

The sea may feel too cool for a long swim, and cloudy spells can soften the views. Keep Nan'ao Island for a brighter day rather than making the crossing your only plan.

Winter customs and crowds

The winter solstice, known locally as Dongzhi, falls in December. Chaoshan families mark it with tangyuan, chewy rice balls often served in sweet soup. It's a good time to try them in town, though the date changes each year. Christmas isn't a major local holiday.

If you hate crowds, December is a good choice before the Lunar New Year rush. It's one of Shantou's best-weather months, so visitor demand can be higher than in the rainier summer. Prices may rise on weekends, but the city is usually less pressured than during Spring Festival.

Make room for a walk

Travelling with kids? The mild afternoons make a stroll around Small Park, or Xiaogongyuan, easier than in Shantou's sticky summer heat. Stop for Chaoshan beef hotpot when the evening cools; diners cook thin slices of beef in a bubbling broth.

For Nan'ao Island, take the island road across Nan'ao Bridge and allow time for the return trip. December's shorter daylight means you'll have less time for stops along the coast. Keep the old town as a handy alternative if clouds roll in.
