Mild days by the bay

March feels mild rather than hot, with daytime highs around 22°C and evenings near 15°C. Humidity is high, and the sky is often cloudy, so you may get grey spells between brighter breaks. Rain falls on about 11 days, with more rain than in February but less than in April.

It's a comfortable month for walking around Shantou's old town, including the arcades and streets near Small Park. You can also take a coastal stroll when the weather is clear. Long beach days are less dependable, and heavy showers can interrupt outdoor plans. Keep indoor stops, such as a tea shop, in mind.

March events and crowds

March doesn't have a major fixed festival unique to Shantou. The Lantern Festival follows the lunar calendar, so it sometimes falls in March; celebrations and dates vary. Qingming, a public holiday for family visits to ancestral graves, usually falls in early April, not March.

If you hate crowds, March is often a calmer choice than the Chinese New Year period, when many people travel to visit family. It's not one of Shantou's best-known peak months, either: December to February are the strongest months overall. Prices may be less pressured than during major holiday travel, though weekends can still draw local visitors.

Travelling with kids? The mild weather makes a Small Park stroll easier than a sticky summer outing, but rain can make a full day outdoors awkward. Pair the walk with a meal nearby, then try Chaoshan beef hotpot or an oyster omelette if the skies turn grey.
