March feels mild rather than warm. Days reach about 21°C, but evenings can feel cool, especially by the water. Rain falls on around 14 days, and cloudy skies are common, so keep plans flexible.

It's a good month for walking around Zhongshan Road, visiting Nanputuo Temple or exploring Gulangyu's old lanes. The damp weather can make long coastal walks less pleasant, and the sea is usually too cool for a comfortable beach swim. Save beach time for a brighter spell.

Events and crowds

March doesn't have a major annual festival that's reliably held in the same month. The Lantern Festival follows the lunar calendar and can fall in February or March, so its timing changes each year. There's no fixed March holiday period to plan around.

If you hate crowds, March is a calmer choice than October to January, Xiamen's best-known travel season. You'll generally find fewer visitors than during major holidays, and prices are often gentler than in peak months. Rain can still affect ferry trips and outdoor plans, though.

Tips for Xiamen in March

Travelling with kids? Keep Gulangyu for a clear day, when its gardens and sea views are easier to enjoy. The ferry ride is part of the fun, but rough or wet weather can make the crossing less appealing.

For Gulangyu, take the visitor ferry from Xiamen International Cruise Center to Sanqiutian or Neicuo'ao. Check the sailing point before leaving; visitors don't usually board from the local ferry pier beside Zhongshan Road. If rain sets in, head back to the city for peanut soup, a sweet local snack, or browse the covered arcades along Zhongshan Road.
